The scoreboard matters less than the habits coaches are trying to identify and teach.

Summer League invites quick conclusions. A rookie scores 27 and is declared ready. Another struggles and is labeled a concern. Coaches see something different: a compressed classroom where every possession reveals decision-making, communication and adaptability.

What Coaches Actually Grade

Can a guard recognize the second defender? Does a wing rotate before the pass is made? Can a big set a useful screen, sprint back and communicate the coverage? These details determine whether a player earns an NBA role long before a box score does.

Systems Before Statistics

Young players are also learning terminology, spacing rules and the pace of professional preparation. That is why one strong game is encouraging but not conclusive. The more useful question is whether the player repeats the right reads when the opponent adjusts.
