Early NBA Power Rankings: Evidence Before Reputation
Our opening top ten rewards early results, accounts for availability and leaves room to change our minds.
An independent Hardwood Highlights top ten, prepared October 27 before that day’s games. These are editorial rankings, not official standings or a prediction of the final table.
Independent Hardwood Highlights analysis follows.
How this edition works
This first edition focuses on ten teams. We weigh the opening results, the ability to create repeatable possessions and the players currently available. The sample is small, so the order is provisional. The questions below explain what could change our assessment.
1. Detroit Pistons
Reward the unbeaten opening. The next test is whether the offense keeps creating good decisions when the first option is removed.
2. Los Angeles Lakers
A 3–0 start earns a high position. The sustainability question is how much useful offense remains on a night without a 52-point performance.
3. Oklahoma City Thunder
Keep them near the top while reducing certainty. The Williams and Wallace absences make functioning rotation combinations an immediate priority.
4. Minnesota Timberwolves
Our next checkpoint is consistency across different styles of opponent, particularly when the game requires patient half-court possessions.
5. Cleveland Cavaliers
Give connected execution more weight than a single hot shooting spell. We want to see dependable decisions at both ends in close games.
6. Denver Nuggets
The watch point is how well the group converts an initial advantage into a second useful action and finishes its defensive possessions.
7. San Antonio Spurs
Look for repeated execution rather than isolated flashes: taking care of the ball, protecting the glass and making clear late-clock decisions.
8. Boston Celtics
The next evidence should come from role clarity. Can the same combinations handle pressure without needing difficult individual rescue plays?
9. Houston Rockets
Possession quality is the test: make an offensive rebound useful without allowing transition chances to erase its value.
10. New York Knicks
The 0–3 opening lowers their current position. This is a demand for a response, not a prediction of where they will finish.
What will move the next edition
A result should matter more when the performance behind it looks repeatable. Availability can also change the order without a team doing anything wrong on the court. We will look for stronger evidence of offensive connections, defensive possessions completed with rebounds and useful bench combinations. No previous HH rank is listed because this is the opening edition of this ranking series.
