Nneka Ogwumike Leaves on Her Own Terms

A former MVP, champion, 11-time All-Star and longtime union president is closing a career that mattered on both sides of the ball—and well beyond it.

Nneka Ogwumike announced that the 2026 season will be her final WNBA season, bringing a 15-year career toward its close with the Los Angeles Sparks, the franchise where most of her professional story was written.

The résumé is already complete

Ogwumike’s résumé already places her among the league’s defining forwards: 2012 Rookie of the Year, 2016 MVP, 2016 champion and 11-time All-Star. Her longevity matters, but so does the way she sustained production deep into her career rather than simply accumulating seasons.

Leadership became part of the legacy

Her influence also extends beyond the stat sheet. As president of the WNBPA since 2016, Ogwumike has helped lead players through major collective-bargaining negotiations during a period when the league’s visibility, economics and player voice have all changed dramatically.

There is still basketball left

The farewell should not be treated as a nostalgia tour alone. Los Angeles still has games to play, and Ogwumike is still producing. The final weeks offer a chance to watch a veteran star manage possessions, defend with positioning and remain useful without needing the game to revolve around her.
